Turkey, Spinach, and Red Onion Burgers

This delicious recipe can curb your burger craving, while satisfying your body’s need for vegetables. The patty is made with (you guessed it) turkey, spinach and red onion! Dress your burger with tomato, lettuce, ketchup, and mustard to give it the final touch!

Ingredients for 4 servings:

  1. 1 clove of smashed garlic
  2. 10 ounces of spinach
  3. 1 cup finely chopped red onion
  4. 1 pound lean ground turkey
  5. ½ cup rolled oats

Steps:

  1. Preheat your oven to 400 °F.
  2. Set a large sauté pan on a stove with high heat. Throw in the smashed garlic and 10 ounces of spinach until the two ingredients wilt. Pat the cooked ingredients dry with a paper towel. Set the large pan aside for later use.
  3. Chop the cooked spinach and garlic on a cutting board, then put the ingredients into a large bowl.
  4. In the same large bowl, add the chopped red onion, lean ground turkey, and rolled oats. Mix the contents with your hands until the ingredients appear well mixed.
  5. Portion the mixture into 4 even balls.
  6. Turn your stove to high heat again, and using the same large sauté pan from earlier, coat the surface with cooking spray. Once the pan is very hot, use a spatula to put one of the burger balls into the pan. Use the spatula to flatten the mixture into a flat patty. Once the mixture begins to crust, flip the burger and do the same on the other side.
  7. Once both sides are crusted, finish the cooking process in the oven. The patties should be thoroughly cooked in about 5 minutes. Be sure you check that the patty is cooked thoroughly.

This burger is full of nutrients from the vegetables cooked in the patty. You can expect a healthy dose of vitamins A and E, protein, fiber, zinc, thiamin, calcium, and iron from the spinach; fiber and folic acid from the red onion; manganese, phosphorus, copper, B-vitamins, iron, selenium, magnesium and zinc from the rolled oats; and a plethora of great vitamins from the turkey such as B3 and B6, choline, vitamin B1 and vitamin B12.

Depending on your diet, feel free to add cheese and use the proper bread (or greens!) that support your goal! Often, making small adjustments to your diet can result in longer term changes.
