Life can get messy, it’s one of the wonderful things that makes us human.  Taking care of yourself and recharging your batteries is something that no one can do for you.  You must take an active approach to your mental health and well-being.  Look no further than your 5 senses to guide you.  Try some of these instead of automatically reaching for wine and Ben and Jerry’s.

Touch

A weighted blanket can be your best buddy.  Science proves feeling snug, hugged and swaddled can immediately calm the active mind.  The touch and feel of a weighted blanket can not only help with anxiety, but also help you sleep better.  There are so many options and all price points, you can even start with a lap weighted blanket to see if it works for you.

Smell

Scents are such a magical element.  A smell can take you back in time, recall fond memories or bring a smile to your face.  Find what smells yield happiness and calm.  Stock yourself with essential oils you can rub on your skin or use in diffusers.  Lotions, sprays, anything that you can grab in a pinch to ease yourself into calm.

Sound

Music, soundscapes and audiobooks are another source of relaxation.  Find a chill playlist or listen to the sound of rain to soothe yourself.  Even if it’s just on in the background, it will assist with sending your mind to other places instead of the chaos inside your head.  Ask friends for suggestions of audiobooks or authors they love and try listening yourself to peace.  You can even put these on while falling asleep.

Taste

Food can be a superpower when it comes to distraction.  Make sure you are not using self-care as an excuse for a free-for-all binge (though sometimes that can definitely help!)  Try eating some foods that relieve anxiety.  Oranges are one of those superfoods.  Have a stock on hand and grab one early and often!  Plus, the bonus physical work peeling it will also give your mind a distraction.

Sight

Did you know you can teleport?  When life gets sticky, take a moment to close your eyes and transport yourself somewhere else.  Think vividly – what does this place look like, smell like.  Is the sun shining?  Is it cold and windy?  Paint yourself a detailed picture of your happy place.  These very thoughts will harness your mind in a positive place instead of a negative one.  Practice this tool while implementing breathing exercises to take it to the next level.

It can be so difficult taking time to yourself in your crazy life, but it is essential to your well-being.  If you are new to cognizant self-care, using your senses are a quick easy way to find what works best for you.  You can begin to come up with a plan of action to keep the mind healthy and calm so you can take on any mess that comes your way.
