When cleaning your home, it can be frustrating searching though bottle after bottle of cleaning solutions that are made of who knows what—all featuring hefty price tags. But several household staples that you already have in your pantry can be used to scrub your home spotless.
White Vinegar
Vinegar is one of the toughest products for fighting mold, grease, and stains. After all, there’s a reason why a lot of cleaning supplies say they include vinegar in their solution! Mix vinegar with a little liquid soap and a few drops of your favorite essential oil and go to town scrubbing your sink, shower, and toilet. Better yet, white vinegar is incredibly cheap, with small bottles costing less than a dollar in most grocery stores.
Ketchup
Remember the whole “stick a penny in a packet of ketchup” trick when you were a kid? There’s a reason why it worked so well! The acids from the vinegar and tomatoes that make up ketchup are excellent for cleaning the brass and silver around your home. Rub it into the metal you want to clean, let it sit for no more than 10 minutes, and clean it off to reveal gorgeous, shiny metal.
Salt
When it comes to dealing with grease, salt is the savior you’ve been looking for. Next time grease drips into your oven, sprinkle salt over the fresh spill. Once the oven cools, it will be easy to wipe clean with a microfiber cloth.
Lemons
The natural acid in lemons makes for a great cleaner and sanitizer—with the added benefit of them leaving your home smelling fresh and squeaky-clean. Rub half a lemon over a wooden cutting board to sanitize it, or toss the rinds into the garbage disposal after they’ve been juiced to give it a quick clean.
Baking Soda
Baking soda is arguably the king of cleaning supplies and does an incredible job eliminating odors from your kitchen and bathroom. You can use the traditional method of leaving a new box of baking soda open in your refrigerator to capture and eliminate stinky smells (just don’t use it for baking afterward!) or combine it with vinegar to help unclog a drain. As an abrasive powder, it is also great for fighting stubborn stains in your sink or tub (but use caution as you don’t want to damage your appliances by over scrubbing).
These natural cleaning solutions can save you money and leave you feeling good about the products you use to keep your home sparkling clean.
