One of the most important aspects of our overall health is our mental health. Hectic lives and demanding schedules can make it challenging to maintain a positive headspace at times. However, making mental health a priority is one of the best things a person can do for themselves. Here are few tips on how to make that possible.

Exercise

We are all familiar with the benefits of physical exercise. Take that time for yourself! In an article about reducing stress, the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA) states the following in regards to exercise, “It can reduce stress. Studies show that it is very effective at reducing fatigue, improving alertness and concentration, and at enhancing overall cognitive function.” Long story short: get moving!

Eat a Balanced Diet

Believe it or not, nutrition plays a role in our overall mental health as well. Eating a well- balanced diet and avoiding processed foods can reduce feelings of depression according to a mentalhealth.org article. Make sure you are incorporating lots of vegetables into your diet.

Positive Self-Talk

It’s easy to be your own worst critic. But beating yourself up mentally isn’t going to get you very far. Try practicing positive self-talk. Remind yourself of your good qualities and celebrate your successes. If you need suggestions on ways you can practice this skill, Elizabeth Scott from verywellmind.com wrote an article with amazing insights and tips.

Express your Feelings

It is important to reach out to our support system when we need to. There is no shame in sharing your mental burden with a sympathetic ear. Find someone whom you trust with your feelings and let them help you. It is amazing what a little understanding can do for a person. Journaling is also a great way to express your feelings. If you aren’t sure exactly what to say or how to say it, write down anything until you understand your feelings a little more. It is also a great way to organize your thoughts.

Unplug

A surprising amount of mental anguish can come as a result of too much on our plates. Whether it’s too many upcoming commitments, or an excess of social media binging, sometimes it is necessary to unplug. It can be easy to feel like we must ‘do it all’ or compare our life to those we follow on social media. These habits can be extremely damaging to a person’s mental health. If you are prone to these kinds of behavior, try a social media fast. If you can, leave your phone at home for a day or even a weekend while you go away! A break from social media can be incredibly refreshing. Also, practice saying no when you know you’ve already got a lot on your plate.

Remember to prioritize your mental health. Life can be extremely busy, but checking in with yourself is crucial. You deserve to feel your best inside and out.
