When you hear self-care, most first think of a spa day. This is one way to engage in self-care. We all want to look and feel our best physically. Physically being at our best can help us mentally be at our best. However, there are other things that we can do to enhance our self-care outside of the spa. See how you are doing in these different areas of self-care.
Friendships
Introvert or extrovert friendships are needed. Being alone too much is not suitable for your mental health. We are not meant to be solitary beings. Taking the time to plan times to relax with friends is an excellent way to take care of yourself. Having those that you can bounce your thoughts off helps relieve stress. They can help validate your feelings and help you know that you are not alone in your struggles. This is not something you can do alone. While making the time can be challenging, you will never come home feeling it was a waste of time. We need others in our lives, so make sure you give your friendships the time you need.
Assistance
Being a one-person show can be impressive but is not good in the long run. Asking for help can be a form of self-care. Letting those you trust know that you need help is not bad. However, doing more than you can is a bad thing. Your physical and mental health will suffer if you push yourself too far. Another side of this is accepting help when it is offered. It will not be impressive to do everything yourself and suffer. Be humble and ask or accept assistance. This is one of the easiest ways to take care of yourself.
Holiday
What do you have to look forward to on your calendar? If the answer is nothing, then you need to change that. Plan something for the next holiday. Or plan your own event. This can be a trip or a staycation. As long as it is something that you will enjoy. Then when you look at the calendar, you are working toward something. Keep this pattern up. Always have something in the future. Knowing you have a trip will lift your spirits when the mundane days link together. Self-care is very much mental. It will help if you stay upbeat. And what is more exciting than time with loved ones or exploring a new place.
Best Friends
Be your own best friend. Treat yourself the way you would your best friend. When analyzing yourself, only think thoughts that you would share about a friend. Would you point out all their flaws? Then do not do that to yourself. Your thoughts matter. They can change your mood in a second. Work on only allowing positive reviews to occupy your mind. When negativity seeps in, overpower it with all the positive around you. Practice makes perfect when making your best friend you.
Take care of all of you, not just what people see.
