We’ve all heard the expression about putting the oxygen mask on ourselves before we can help anyone else with their mask. It’s a great way to explain why self-care is so important. You can’t take care of others when you aren’t taking care of yourself. You may think you don’t have the time or money to do so. However, effective self-care doesn’t have to cost much. Here are a few ideas to help you feel refreshed on a budget.

Exercise

One of the best ways to show yourself some love is to move your body. According to an article written for amhurst.edu, “Physical activity stimulates brain chemicals that leave you feeling happier and more relaxed, providing an emotional lift and reducing stress. Exercise gives everyone a boost, and can be especially helpful in alleviating symptoms of depression and anxiety.” Some other added benefits to exercising are better sleep, improved body image and self esteem as well as a boost in energy. There are few people that couldn’t benefit from at least one of these things. The best part about this exercise is that it can cost nothing. Show yourself some love and get moving!

Take Care of Yourself

Schedule Down Time

Sometimes we wear ourselves to the bone by scheduling ourselves too thin. It can be easy to do. We’re afraid of saying no, or we don’t want anyone to know we’re not superman or superwoman. The fact is, you can’t pour from an empty cup. Schedule time for yourself in which you can do nothing. Take a nap, watch your favorite show, scroll Instagram idly for hours. Do whatever YOU want to do from the comfort of your home. For many people, time for relaxation is rare. Take advantage of the free moments you have.

Declutter and Organize

The mess you have in your home can often be directly related to stress and anxiety you’re experiencing in your life. If you’re feeling out of control, depressed, or anxious, cleaning and organizing your surroundings can be a great way to regain a bit of your sanity back. According to an article written for blurtitout.org, “Focusing on just one room a great place to start. Not only will it help us to feel productive, but it creates a much nicer environment to sit in – and having one clean room means we can shut off the rest of the house, and relax.” Self care can mean a million different things. One of the most important things we can do for ourselves is provide a calming, clean space to live in. When we feel as though our home is a safe haven from the world, we are creating the optimal environment in which we can recharge.
